California’s Surging Energy Bills Are Its Own Fault

California residents who rely on natural gas have complained of monthly energy bills approaching $800, Governor Gavin Newsom has called for an investigation into prices, and manufacturers of everything from steel to cement have said the only way to cut costs would be to move to another state.

Sunrun Solar Installations Topple Record Set by Tesla’s SolarCity

Sunrun Inc., the top US residential solar company, has surpassed an industry record that dates back seven years. The company deployed 275.4 megawatts of panels in the fourth quarter, surpassing the 272 megawatts added by SolarCity in the last period of 2015. SolarCity’s record came as the once-mighty company was near the peak of its success, and less than a year before it was acquired by Tesla Inc.

U.S. Battery Installations Soared in 2022, Reshaping Power Grids

The United States is in a battery boom, adding nearly as much capacity on the power grid in 2022 as it did in all previous years combined. The surge is reshaping America’s regional electric grids. In California, for example, analysts credit a wave of new battery installations with sparing the state from electric blackouts late last summer, when a searing heat wave sent power demand soaring. “It means we can move the energy generated by wind and solar to when it is needed, like moving solar generated during the day to the evening when everyone comes home and turns on their air conditioning,” said Ric O’Connell, the executive director of GridLab. “It is enabling us to rely more and more on wind and solar.”

Jimmy Carter’s Presidency Was Defined by Energy

Last week Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, began home hospice care at the age of 98. The news prompted tributes to a man known for his dedication to promoting peace and fighting disease, who has led a famously modest post-presidential life in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter is also the president who put solar panels on the White House and suggested that Americans wear a sweater and keep the thermostat down to save energy. But that only skims his legacy on energy and the environment, one of the most substantial of any US president.

Even $370 Billion in US Incentives Won’t Solve All of Solar’s Struggles

Five months after President Joe Biden signed the most ambitious climate law in US history, the country is poised to install a record amount of solar power in 2023. But the industry’s big growth spurt may be another year or two away. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) calls for about $370 billion in spending on clean energy to help arrest the worsening climate crisis, but a confluence of factors—supply snarls, trade tensions, delays in connection to power grids and uncertainty about forthcoming rules stemming from the new law—will likely constrain

China Invests $546 Billion in Clean Energy, Far Surpassing the U.S.

China once again topped the world in clean energy investments last year, a trend that could challenge U.S. efforts to develop more homegrown manufacturing. Nearly half of the world’s low-carbon spending took place in China, according to a recent analysis from market research firm Bloomberg NEF. The country spent $546 billion in 2022 on investments that included solar and wind energy, electric vehicles and batteries.
